PANEL 'NOVI SAD – CITY OF WETLANDS: WATER, NATURE AND HEALTH IN A CHANGING CLIMATE': Cooperation is key to preserving and fighting climate change

As part of the Ecology Fair, a panel discussion was held on Thursday in the 'Master' Hall on the topic 'Novi Sad – the city of wetlands: water, nature and health in a changing climate'.

The moderator was a member of the Council for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Energy Efficiency of the City of Novi Sad, Vanja Petković, and Nikola Stojnić from the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection, Kosta Lalošević from PE "Vode Vojvodine", Marko Marinković from PE "Vojvodinašume" and Dr. Sanja Bijelović from the Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina spoke about this important topic.
Wetlands are among the most valuable, but also the most endangered in the world. They clean water, prevent floods, preserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change. Novi Sad is located on the banks of the Danube, surrounded by backwaters, ponds, alluvial forests and protected areas such as the slightly more distant Koviljski rit and Titelski breg. These habitats are home to rare birds, fish and plants, but they are also the city's natural allies in the fight against droughts and flash floods. That is why it is very important that Novi Sad is the first city in the Balkans to receive the title of Wetland City – a valuable Ramsar award, which obliges to take care of these habitats.
The panel pointed out the current issues and pronounced extremes in the Danube water regime, from long-term droughts and low water levels to sudden increases and flood threats. The importance of adapting water infrastructure to such climatic conditions was particularly emphasized, as well as the preservation of the natural functions of the Danube and its coastline. It was pointed out what happens in nature, especially in ponds and marshes, when they do not get enough water, how much the flora and fauna suffer, what happens in forest areas due to climate change, but also how much the quality of the Danube River has changed and what it means for both nature and people. The importance of cooperation between different institutions, professions and the wider community in nature conservation was discussed. It was concluded that the best solutions for extreme situations, as well as all changes that occur, must be designed as a team, with mutual respect, that is, that it is necessary to find a balance between the needs of people, the economy and nature itself.
Yesterday, the importance of wetlands and Novi Sad, which has this title, was pointed out in a panel project by the Academic Center for Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development and the Humanitarian and Environmental Organization "Stopper to Laughter".
